Antique Victorian 1891 Sterling Hallmarked Maltese Cross Engraved Brooch
This fabulous antique Victorian sterling brooch was crafted in Birmingham England in 1891. The unusual design features an eight pointed star applied to a Maltese cross, the oval center heavily engraved with ivy leaves, the symbol of wedded bliss. Victorians loved to infuse their jewelry with heavy symbolism, the star a symbol of protection, the arms of the Maltese cross symbolizing temperance, prudence, justice, and fortitude. The brooch is signed B&W for William Brown and Bernard Wheelwright, the company founded in 1857. The brooch is fully hallmarked, in excellent condition, measures 1 3/8 by 1 1/8, and closes with a c-clasp
