Victorian Blackened Sash Brooch with Black Molded Glass Stones
This stunning late Victorian sash brooch features an unusual foliate design with art nouveau elements, most likely a transition piece. Possible a mourning piece, with the metal having been blackened and the use of black stones, but it would not have been deep mourning due to the use of faceted stones. Since the death rate was high, and even cousins were mourned, women were often in black, and black became a fashion statement. The brooch is quite unusual, and I can't find another like it. The black faceted glass stones are molded. The brooch is large like most sash brooches, measuring 3 1/4 by 2 1/4". The open C-clasp holds securely.
